A Billings teenager whose mother had recently inherited a lot of money is accused of trying to set up a $10,000 deal to have her killed.
According to the Billings Gazette, Matthew Russell Campbell (photo above), 18, of Roundup, offered to pay a man to kill his mother, Dana Campbell, as well as an unidentified 18-year-old Arizona man.
But the person Campbell allegedly tried to hire was an undercover FBI agent. Campbell was arrested Tuesday. According to the Gazette:
-
Campbell agreed to pay the agent $10,000 and told him his family had received a large inheritance from his recently deceased grandfather. Some of the money was in a safe in his mother’s house along with some high-quality rifles, Campbell told the agent. Campbell also drew a map to his mother’s residence and to the car lot.
Campbell allegedly made some of his plans while at the Billings Pre-Release Center, where he was serving time for a probation violation following a theft conviction. The story says he asked the undercover agent to give him advance warning of when he’d be in Billings, so he could get a pass from the center and meet him to make final plans for the killing.
