Couple of scam alerts – online money transfers and energy ‘savings’

From the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office:

scamsYou’re buying something online and the seller insists that money transfer is the only form of payment that’s acceptable. Demand to use a credit card, and escrow service or another way to pay. If they insist you can only pay by money transfer, be prepared to walk away from the deal. It’s a sure sign you won’t get the item – or your money back.

And from the Ravalli Electric Co-op, via Ravalli Republic reporter Perry Backus: ‘The postcard showing up in mailboxes around Ravalli County offers a free dinner and the potential to reduce your energy bills up to 45 percent. In small print, the notice on the card adds: Actual savings may vary.” That’s an understatement. The scam is similar to a recent one in Flathead County involving alleged federal tax refunds for energy savings.
