Gwen Florio

I remember during the OJ Simpson trial Jay Leno had a repeating “skit” wherein actors dressed as the principals (sans Nicole and Goldman, of course…or not of course) would do song and dance routines. He ran it many times. Every time I saw it I felt more and more sad. Sad thinking of those two children who would someday reinvestigate the culture surrounding that day they lost their mother. And I never watched Jay Leno again. Ever. Some events in life are terrible, not twitterable. Despite my admiration for Ms. Florio’s management of language in her longer, more complex pieces, I cannot feel anything but sadness at the tones of a song-and-dance routine that fall flatly from this approach to reporting. The line between moxy and macabre has been crossed. Honesty must set tone, even in up-beat reporting, and this tone is dismissive of the psychological and physical wreckage.
