‘A real piece of work’ – Alleged Kalispell killer pleads not guilty

Relatives of a mother and daughter shot to death expressed their outrage after the accused killer’s appearance in court today. The Missoulian’s Tristan Scott has the story, below:

KALISPELL – The Kalispell man charged in a Christmas Day double homicide pleaded not guilty Thursday in Flathead County District Court, exchanging occasional glances with an acquaintance seated one row behind him while the victims’ grieving family members solemnly observed the court proceeding.

Tyler Michael Miller, who had his name legally changed from Tyler Cheetham, remains jailed without bond for the gunshot deaths of Jaimi Lynn Hurlbert, 35, and her 15-year-old daughter, Alyssa Burkett. The Flathead County Attorney’s Office is deciding whether to seek the death penalty.

Miller, 34, appeared for the arraignment hearing before District Judge David Ortley. He wore blue jail-issue pants and a matching t-shirt that revealed his kaleidoscopically tattooed arms, and sat beside his attorneys, Nicole Ducheneaux and Nicholas Aemisegger. Stealing occasional glances at the unidentified friend sitting behind him and sometimes smiling, Miller was mostly silent during the proceeding, though once, while being read his rights, he asked the judge to pause for a moment while he consulted his attorney.
